Understanding Toy Safety Regulations: EN 71

Toys are a treasured part of childhood that help us learn and have fun.

However, when manufacturers, importers, or distributors want to place a toy on the EU market, they have to show that it is safe through compliance with the Toy Safety Directive, with reference to specific harmonized EN standards such as EN 71 standards.

This aims to reduce toy-related accidents by identifying their hazards, considering their foreseeable use, and bearing in mind children’s behavior.

EN 71 covers chemicals and heavy metals, flammability, small parts, and mechanical properties, most notably:

Once your product passes its relevant testing(s), a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) will be issued.  The test report should also be included in the technical file, which normally includes:
