What is Compostable Products?
Nowadays, it seems that almost everywhere we look, we are seeing sustainable consumer products replacing their traditional counterparts. From food production and fashion to lifestyle products, an undeniable change is on the rise. With such an increasing focus, along with favorable government regulations for green procurement policies, biodegradable plastic manufacturers have significant opportunities in the new end-use industries such as electronics, medical, and automotive.
Compostable products are defined as products that can disintegrate and biodegrade into natural elements such as water, biomass, and carbon dioxide in a composting environment, leaving no toxicity in the soil. Apart from their ability to completely disintegrate, compostable material goes one step further by providing the earth with nutrients once the material has completely broken down.

- BS EN 13432: 2000 Packaging. Requirements for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation. Test scheme and evaluation criteria for the final acceptance of packaging
- ASTM D6400-21 Standard Specification for Compostable Plastics
- GB/T 28206:2011 Specification for compostable plastic (可堆肥塑料技術要求)

Remarks
Only applicable test items will be conducted on selected product nature and destination market. Detailed test item list will be included in order confirmation email to upon order purchase.
Turnaround time (TAT) and service price are subject to the content specified in the service scope and feature. Failure to provide test-ready samples or application documents would cause a longer period of TAT.
SGS Green Mark Certification
Products certified/verified under the Environmental Claim Certification and Verification Schemes will gain global recognition via the SGS Green Mark, which can be used in products, promotion material, and advertising to show end-users that the environmental claim is certified/verified by SGS.
To obtain our Compostable Mark, additional tests are required:
- Compostable Material Testing
- EU REACH SVHC
- Material Quantification
- Chemical separation, PGC-MS, DSC, FTIR, TGA, or others
The validity of this certificate is 3 years and the service lead time for the certification is an additional 5 – 7 working days.
* Remarks:
- A post-market surveillance is required 1.5 years upon the issuance of the certification (additional costs apply)
- This service is not applicable to products destined for France and California markets due to local or national requirements.
